Hank Moody is a charming ladies' man of a writer and novelist, that is plagued by personal demons. Though, being a writer, Hank hasn't written a word in years, he blames his writer's block on a variety of reasons, ranging from the hedonism of Los Angeles, to his girlfriend Karen leaving him.
He also has to deal with being in love with Karen, while she is about to marry Bill Cross, a man who loves nature, are and owns Hell-A magazine, also his goth twelve year old daughter, Becca and "drowning himself in a sea of pointless pu*sy."
Hank constantly deals with the consequences of his lack of will to say "no" to available drugs, sex and alcohol, while trying to show his family that he can be a good, responsible caring father to Becca and a monogamous partner to Karen.
Hank now, though reluctantly, works for Hell-a Magazine, writing Blogs, which is something he HATES but it was all his agent, and friend, Charlie Runkle could get for him.
