The forces of darkness massed in the depths of Talanthia's underworld, and broke through to the surface. In an event only known as The Breaking, hordes of orcs and other things much more foul scoured the land and attempted to take the known world as their own. Talanthia fought back against these demons, and though the losses were heavy, they pushed the orc hordes into the mountains. Caralym fell during the assault. A massive Human fortress city, located on the side of a cliff. The demons took the city as their own, and the ancient libraries fell with it. Since the taking of Caralym, the teaching of magic has fallen into decline, as the largest academies had existed in Caralym thanks to the massive libraries.
Hundreds of years later, and Caralym remains under the control of the demons. Cities are allying themselves with the banner of the demons, and hope is beginning to fade in Talanthia. There are whispers of flying shadows stalking through the air, the deathly Naz'tarak flyers of the ancient world. They are reapers carried by corrupted dragons.
All is not lost. Portals are opening around Talanthia. An old wizard and exiled king are locked in a race to root out these portals before the Naz'tarak can find them. The red gates are the only hope Talanthia has left of surviving.
