The Village of Bones takes place in 2010. There is no longer parents or any adults besides 21 years old, the age range goes from 5 years to 21 years old. They live in a forest that is hostile against them, because the animals in the forest have begun to mutate into things unrecognizable to them. The beasts have become almost rabid in the mind save the fact that they mate, they kill and eat almost anything.
The Village exists in the Forest's trees. These trees are of all kinds and there is really no groups of them, they are just random (IE oaks next to pines, and sycamores next to apple trees). The Village is a group of wooden platforms mounted on the trees, it has ladders that lead up from the Forest Floor to them. Swinging bridges connect the platforms to each other and each platform has a purpose.
The Children know nothing about the outside world. They only know of their world, the Forest. They don't know if the adults are anywhere else in the world considering the Forest is too hostile to get out of. The rest of the world does have magic, just like the kids do (though they do not know that). Their magic consists of elemental magic, which they are born with, and Dark magic, which is forbidden and they have to learn. The Children no longer have technology, they used to but since they no longer have anywhere to plug it in it was never used. They do use books, however, that they have made by writing with charcoal on animal skin.
The Children keep farm animals that have not been affected by the change. They keep chickens and mostly sheep. The sheep they use for their wool and making cloth.
